Welcome to a website devoted to both the encouragement of learning how to play a musical instrument and the preservation of the four-string banjo.

My name is Gary. As of the moment I'm typing this (October 5, 2004,) I'm forty-five years old and have been playing a plectrum banjo for seven months. Although I've had a guitar since I was ten, I never took formal lessons and never devoted my time to playing it every day. The result was a mediocre dreamer who could play rhythm guitar in the world's worst garage band. I still wanted to play guitar but I never devoted the time to be good at it.

Discovering jazz banjo and listening to the masters gave me something new and fresh to start learning right. I'm a computer engineer by trade so it was only natural to create a website. I hope to make this place interesting enough for you to come back to. I will have sound clips of my progress as I make it to my goal of professional banjoist.

I am a student and my opinions on practicing and teachers are based on my impressions as a student. Someday I'll be a teacher and I may lose what I thought as a student. This website is to remind myself.

FIGA is the premier banjo club!
I am experimenting with jamming and learning songs on a midi-based karaoke player that can change the tempo and the key of the song. It is called vanBasco and it is free!
